When you volunteer at Aldea hostel, you are able to enjoy your travels not as a tourist but as a resident of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Volunteering is the best way to fully immerse yourself in a culture. So in Exchange for volunteering, Aldea will provide you housing with a room shared with other volunteers from around the world. An average day of work includes making beds in the morning or helping alongside the kitchen staff at the restuarant located right next to the hostel. You will be able to work for a few hours in the morning or a few hours at night. During your time off you can explore San Jose with just a short walk into town. You can make your way to  La Sabana metropolitan park which is a large park with many trails and lots of exploring to do. La Sabana is also home to the National Stadium which is a large arena for sports and events. You can also make your way downtown and visit many of the local markets as well as cheer on street performers playing music, dancing, and showcasing their talents.  And maybe the most important benefit of being a volunteer at Aldea hostel is working for four days and having three days off every week to visit the rest of Costa Rica. There is a bus that leaves from San Jose to get you to wherever you need to go in a few hours, so for three days a week you are able to experience all that Costa Rica has to offer including its many beaches, national parks, waterfalls, and volcanoes.

Adam from the United States enjoys how easy it is to hop on a bus and get to anywhere he needs go in a short amount of time. “I also really enjoy walking to the park and sitting in my hammock while eating local food and enjoying the view of San Jose.”

Very exciting news arrived for us at Aldea Hostel recently! It was news so brilliant we jumped atop the benches of the picnic tables in our beautifiul secluded outdoor eating area and our delighted cheers could be heard in nearby downtown San Jose and neighbouring Sabana Park. What is the fantastic news !? Aldea Hostel have been awarded the prestigious Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor for 2016!

In my experience of San José, I have found that the area does not only cater for the city loving folk, but for those who wish to relax in a much more calming area of the Costa Rican capital. Just a five minute walk from the comfort of the Aldea Hostel, I found La Sabana park. The park is home to lush greenary, in which you can unwind and also a lake which offers boat pedalo rides, something I found very enjoyable in the sun!

If you should grow tired of the Paradise La Sabana park offers, you can take a short walk to the art museum, located on the grounds. This is my favourite part of the park, as it not only provides you with amazing exhibits from Costa Rican artists, but international artists too!

While volunteering at Aldea, I´ve discovered that the most pleasurable way to cool down would be to take a dip in the Government swimming pool, it´s Olympic size gives me the opportunity to practice my swimming strokes and it´s short distance makes it the easiest option for excercise or simply a quick swim!
