While San Jose is one of the safest cities in Central America, Aldea Hostel would like to remind you that tourists are sometimes the victims of predatory taxi drivers. Some of our guests have had problems with dramatic fare overcharges and dishonest drivers who pretend our hostel is full and take you somewhere else because they receive bribes from other hostels in our area. Just like how you would protect your valuables in a crowded market, you should protect your wallet from scammer taxi drivers. Always negotiate your fare before you get into the taxi, or insist on using the taxi driver's meter. Remember official taxis are red and have a meter in them. Be safe!
